Rock & Roll is a generic
term, whose sound is rarely predictable. Rock has its origins in country
and blues and early rockers merged the two styles, to create a genre thart
made an identity for itself by its energy, rebellion and catchy hooks.
As the genre aged, it began to shed those characteristics, placing equal
emphasis on craftmanship and pushing the boundaries of the music. Nevertheless
rock music has always maintained its distinctive individuality by being
more of a state of the mind than just musical compositions laced with words.
For most of its life, rock has been fragmented, spinning off new styles
and variations every few years, from Brill Building Pop and heavy metal
to dance-pop and grunge. The Flower Power progressive era of the seventies
was the one that marked the golden age of rock and today it is the bands
of that very age that define the genre. Also born out of this era, were
hard rock, heavy metal, grunge and pop-metal.And today, everything from
Chuck Berry's pounding, three-chord rockers and the sweet harmonies of the
Beatles to the soulful pleas of Otis Redding and the jarring, atonal white
noise of Sonic Youth can be categorized as rock.
Add to that the heavy influences of the voice of Elvis Presley, the legendary
guitaring of BB King and early bands such as The Byrds, Grateful Dead and
the Muddy Waters and you get what today is known as classic retro rock.
Rock music is an evolving dynamic genre that is an artistic expression of
the minds and attitudes of the people who defined it and still continue
to do so. And that's only natural for a genre that began its life as a fusion
of styles. |
